History
James P. Ryon was an active Republican in Charles County for nearly four decades. Ryon's political career began when he was elected as County Commissioner in 1905. In 1918 he was elected as County Treasurer. Ryon also served on the County Welfare and County Road boards.
In addition to being a politician, Ryon was a businessman. He served as president of the board of directors of a La Plata bank, Ryon owned a general store in Waldorf, which opened in 1901. Later, he and his brother Samuel established Ryon Funeral home. After Ryon married his second wife Ula Huntt, he renamed the funeral home Huntt & Ryon. Today it is known as the Huntt Funeral Home. (Ryon's first wife, Lula Naylor died in 1908.)
Throughout his political and business endeavors, Ryon was a tobacco dealer and served on the Maryland State Tobacco Authority from the mid-1940s to 1960. He died in 1963.
