Melinda B. Tyler, Ed.D.
Dr. Melinda B. Tyler was named principal at J.P. Ryon Elementary School in 2019. She has amassed over 22 years in private, public and charter schools. Prior to Ryon, she served as the primary school principal and was placed on the chief academic office team as the director of teacher and scholar effectiveness for the Marion P. Thomas Charter School District in Newark, New Jersey. Dr. Tyler began her career in education as an elementary teacher in 1998 in Baltimore City, Maryland where she received an Outstanding Educator Award. In 2001, she served as an elementary teacher at Bethany Christian Academy in Newark, New Jersey where she was awarded Teacher of the Year. Thereafter, Dr. Tyler served as an elementary teacher in Plainfield, New Jersey and ascended through other leadership positions that include supervisor of elementary education, director of instruction, and acting principal for the Union County TEAMS Charter School District. Throughout her career, she has also served as a board member and mentor to new teachers and principals.
Dr. Tyler earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Goucher College, an MBA from the University of Phoenix, and a doctorate degree in education leadership. During her doctorate program, Dr. Tyler also minored in curriculum development from Nova Southeastern where her applied dissertation research on cultural competence in urban school leadership received an approval rating in the top 3 percent. Her professional memberships include National Association for Elementary School Principals, New Jersey Association for Gifted Children, Association for Supervision Curriculum and Development, and National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc Epsilon Alpha. A fun fact, one of Dr. Tyler’s favorite pastimes is cheerleading, while teaching in Baltimore she was also a professional cheerleader for the NFL Baltimore Ravens. Dr. Tyler is excited to return to Maryland to join the Charles County Public Schools family and serve J.P. Ryon’s scholars, parents, families, staff and community.
Ms. Diedra Barnett was named the Vice Principal at J.P. Ryon Elementary School in 2018. Prior to J.P. Ryon, she was the Reading Resource Teacher at Gale-Bailey Elementary School in Marbury, MD, where she has served since 2014. She has employed her expertise as a Reading Specialist within the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) since 2005. Her assignments within the CCPS include Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School (2008-2014) and Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School (2005-2008); serving as the Reading Resource Teacher at both of these schools. Prior to joining the CCPS team, Ms. Barnett served her educational constituents in the Prince George’s County Public Schools - MD (2001-2005), Houston County Public School - GA (2000-2001), Department of Defense Schools – NJ, GA & Turkey (1995-2000) and Marlboro County Public Schools – SC (1994-1995). Ms. Barnett also served as a Lead Teacher with the Children’s Defense Fund in Bennettsville, SC during 1994-1995.
Ms. Barnett's accomplishments include serving as a Master Teacher and Curriculum Writer for the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Ms. Barnett is a Dyslexia Therapist for Wilson Reading Systems. She is also a certified trainer for Restorative Practices, online facilitator for MSDE and an adjunct professor for the Notre Dame Maryland University.
Ms. Barnett is a native of Bennettsville, South Carolina and completed her undergraduate work at the University of South Carolina. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction (with Administrator I Certification) from McDaniel College.
